Hyde your kids and Hyde your wives, this is where evil presides!
Looking up photos of Jekyll and Hyde on Google, there is an obvious difference in how the two characters are portrayed, even though they're the same person.
Whenever charactersitics of Dr. Jekyll are mentioned within the book, they're always given a somewhat affectionate and admirable tone. Remarked as "well-made" with "every mark of capactiy and kindness" (Stevenson 12), readers can form the idea that Jekyll is someone full of genuine kindess, and is loved by many. Dr. Jekyll is regarded as a handsome and nice man, the kind that you could have a nice chat with over tea, or would help you with your groceries; one that seems like he wouldn't hurt a fly. Overall, Dr. Jekyll is just pleasant and charming. We can see his likeableness into his relationship; Mr. Utterson, his lawyer, and even Dr. Lanyon, though they had a disagreement they are still friends nonetheless.
This starkly contrasts with readers' perception of Mr. Hyde, someone "not easy to describe" (Stevenson 5), someone that's pure evil. While Dr. Jekyll is memorable in a pleasant way, Mr. Hyde is that type of memorable where you can't pinpoint exactly why you were disgusted but you remember the feeling it gave you. Though Mr. Hyde's thoughts and feelings are never expressed in the text, readers definitely know his actions: trampling, MURDER. The audience can draw up the conclusion that Hyde is just an awful person, someone that leaves a bad taste in their mouth.
WHO KNEW THAT THEY WOULD BE THE SAME PERSON? Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde represent the contrast of good and evil that presides in all of us; I'd like to express this duality of mankind in a poem:
Dr. Jekyll- the Good
You need a hand? I'll help you out
Because kindness is something
the world should't be without
I'm Dr. Jekyll, here to assist
Happy to help, that's why I exist
As nice and pleasant as I can be
There's still a part of me that needs to be
FREE
Mr. Hyde- the Bad
Finished one evil deed
On to the next
My thirst for evil needs to be quenched
For I'm Mr. Hyde,
Evil is all I know
The darkness inside me only continutes to grow
Man can't relate, they have no glee
They don't know what it's like to be
FREE
Together
Two is one, one is two
You are me, and I am you
For this is Dr. Jekyll AND Mr. Hyde
This is more to us than meets the eye
Explanation: This poem's intention was to emphasize the duality of both characters, even though they are one: Jekyll's kindness and Hyde's evilness. I wanted to show that one person can hold different layers and personality to them, no one acts or thinks the same way all the time: sometimes thoughts can be "good" and sometimes thoughts can be "bad", but usually we hide that part of ourselves since it's not accepted, hence the need for Dr. Jekyll to be free.
